Our latest download comes courtesy of Süd Electronic’s resident Nick Craddock.

Nick Craddock grew up in the North of England and began DJing in the mid to late 90s, taking initial influence from some of the prominent harder Techno DJs of that time. Originally from an indie/guitar band background, though always with a ravenous appetite for music, he connected with the energy of Techno before learning to appreciate the subtler lure of House music. In time, his horizons broadened to embrace key reference points from Detroit, Chicago, Berlin and Cologne. By the end of the 90s, Nick was growing bored with much of the generic hard Techno being released and began delving deeper after coming into contact with the early output of labels such as Kompakt, Playhouse, Perlon, Background and Klang Elektronik. This music seemed the perfect blend of dancefloor vs. cerebral… oddball samples and otherworldly grooves… interesting and leftfield, but certainly something that could be harnessed to great effect when DJing. Early experiments brought positive reactions from people receptive to these new sounds.

After moving to London in 2000, Nick became more active as a DJ and began seeking out club nights that were on a similar musical wavelength, which at that stage seemed few and far between. Over the next several years, he consolidated his position as a DJ who could be counted on for his tasteful selection based on a broad appreciation of music. Skip forward to 2007 and the musical landscape is quite different, particularly with the so-called Minimal phenomenon. The avoidance of genre pigeonholing could be seen as being even more paramount, though it’s something that Nick takes in his stride. His relationship with the Süd Electronic nights fits this outlook perfectly, and it’s here that he’s settled as resident DJ.
